The CIty & Port of Walla Walla owns over 18,776 feet of empty conduit that was installed during past projects (CARS, 4th & Academy Way, NE C Street) that can be used for dark fiber broadband services. The City is submitting grants through the Economic Development Administration, FCC NTIA, State Broadband Office, Community Economic Revitalization Board, and State Public Works Trust Fund to obtain grant funds to bring a fiber to home network for all city residents. The estimated price tag is $4 million. The concept is that the system would be owned publicly and leased to the private sector.
The City received a grant from AARP for about $18,000 to install free public wifi at Kiwanis Park, Lions Park, Veterans Park, and the Municipal Campus (625 S. College Avenue, College Place).
